Univ. Prof. Dr. Marc Oliver Bettzüge, Director of the Institute of Energy Economics (EWI) at the University of Cologne, becomes a member of the independent Expert Council for Climate Issues. The Federal Government has appointed him and four other scientists to the new, independent Council of Experts on Climate Issues for a term of five years. This body, which was set up on the basis of the Climate Protection Act (KSG), reviews and evaluates the emissions data annually. In addition, the Council of Experts is to take a position on certain packages of measures of the Federal Government and on important individual issues of national climate policy.

Univ.-Prof. Dr. Marc Oliver Bettzüge says: “The independent council of experts appointed by the Federal Government is to examine and evaluate the actual emission data in Germany once a year (§ 12 para. 1 KSG). In this context, the main aim will be to classify the corresponding developments in the overall economic context and the respective legal framework in order to explain the manifold interactions – especially in the case of possible missed targets. In addition, the Council of Experts will comment on certain packages of measures of the Federal Government as well as on important individual issues of national climate policy (Article 12 (2) and (3) KSG).
