Energy consumption is influenced by climate and weather conditions. Thus, in the past winter, seasonal temperature forecasts were of great interest, especially for estimating heating and gas demand. Reliable weather forecasts are required for the safe operation of the energy system. The energy sector needs information on all typical time scales of weather and climate services. The German Weather Service can therefore support the energy transition with a wide range of services and is already working successfully with many stakeholders to this end.
The current status of the energy transition and the role of climate services will be discussed on Tuesday, November 21, 2023 at the 16th Climate Conference of the German Weather Service. The following aspects will be discussed:
– Status and expansion of renewable energies in Germany
– Current examples for the use of climate information in the energy sector and
– for the planning of the energy transition
– Requirements of the energy sector for weather and climate services and networking of actors
