The renunciation of fossil fuels in the supply of heat to buildings is one of the central challenges in the context of climate protection efforts in Germany. On the one hand, a considerable increase in energy efficiency is required, particularly in existing buildings, and on the other hand, the remaining heat demand must be covered by renewable energy sources, with direct or indirect heat generation from electricity likely to play a significant role (“sector coupling”). However, it is difficult to assess in detail which technologies should be used where and to what extent, due in part to the great (local) heterogeneity of the building sector. Both technical-system analyses and the design of regulatory measures for the transformation of heat supply are particularly demanding. Obviously, however, the long investment cycles mean that short-term impulses are needed to prevent climate protection targets in the heating sector from becoming increasingly out of reach.
Against this background, the following organisations will give an interdisciplinary conference on this topic:
