In the course of this study, the Institute of Energy Economics at the University of Cologne (EWI) examines the medium-term development of trade flows and wholesale prices for natural gas as well as the worldwide expansion of liquefaction plants for the export of liquefied natural gas (LNG) and the European expansion of regasification plants for the import of LNG. In addition, possible changes in the natural gas import structure of the European Union are analyzed and possible developments in the natural gas export structures of the most important exporting countries are considered.
On behalf of Zukunft Gas e.V., six scenarios are modeled within the study, which result from two manifestations of demand uncertainty, each combined with three manifestations of supply uncertainty. The central uncertainty on the supply side is the availability of Russian natural gas for a coalition of countries including the EU and other European, North American and Asian countries.
