Electricity prices at record levels in 2021

How record natural gas prices drove wholesale electricity prices. An analysis with the EWI Merit Order Tool

Wholesale prices for electricity reached their highest levels in at least 20 years in 2021. In some cases, electricity has cost more than 500 euros per megawatt hour. The main factors for this increase are the gas prices as well as the prices for hard coal and emission certificates.
