European countries are preparing the ramp-up of electromobility in different ways. A new EWI index shows which European countries are well prepared and which have the greatest need to catch up for the electrification of the transport sector. The countries with the highest “EV Preparedness Score” are Norway, Sweden, and Switzerland. These countries have a strong renewable energy sector. Poland, Hungary, and Ireland have the greatest need to catch up. The main reasons for this result are a CO₂-intensive electricity sector, which reduces the benefits of electric cars compared to internal combustion engines (especially in Poland), as well as lower coverage with charging stations and relatively poor grid quality.
