The International Energy Agency’s latest Coal 2021 report is the world’s most comprehensive forecast of coal demand, supply, and trade, based on detailed analysis of the most recent data at country and sector level, broken down by coal type. The report presents historical data for 2019 and 2020, most up-to-date estimates for 2021 and forecast to 2024. In addition, the report analyses cost and price trends as well as investment in new production capacity.
Driven by the economic recovery, coal power generation and prices rose to new record levels in 2021. By 20214, Coal 2021 forecasts new records for global coal consumption as well as coal production by 2024. This year, the report places a special focus on China and India, the two largest consumers, producers, and importers of coal.
